Bent Paddle

If the Twin Cities breweries are about urban “hype,” Bent Paddle is about the Great Outdoors. Based in Duluth, Minnesota, this brewery is the spiritual home for anyone who has ever strapped a canoe to the roof of a car and driven toward the horizon.

Founded in 2013, the name “Bent Paddle” refers to a common canoeing mishap—the moment your gear yields to the power of the water. It is a brand built on the industrial grit of Duluth’s West End (the Lincoln Park Craft District) and the pristine, freezing-cold waters of the largest freshwater lake in the world.

The Superior Secret

The most important ingredient in Bent Paddle’s beer isn’t the grain or the hops; it’s the Lake Superior water.

Lake Superior is essentially a massive, cold, naturally filtered reservoir containing 10% of the world’s surface fresh water. Because the water is so soft and pure, the brewers don’t have to “strip” it or chemically alter it as much as breweries in other parts of the country. This results in a “clean” finish that defines their entire lineup. When you drink a Bent Paddle beer, you are essentially drinking the soul of the North Shore, minus the hypothermia.

The Caffeinated Canoe

The brewery’s flagship is Bent Hop, a “Golden IPA” that helped define the Minnesota palate. It isn’t a modern “hazy” juice-bomb; it is a piney, citrusy, balanced beer that tastes like a hike through a coniferous forest.

However, their most culturally significant brew might be the Cold Press Black Ale. By infusing their smooth, chocolatey black ale with locally roasted Duluth Coffee Company cold brew, they created a beverage that bridges the gap between “I need to wake up” and “I want to relax.” It is the official drink of the Minnesota morning-after, a caffeinated stout that makes it acceptable to start your weekend at 10:00 AM.

The Cedar and Steel Aesthetic

The taproom is a masterclass in “Northwoods Modern.” It is a vast space filled with warm cedar wood, industrial steel, and a massive fireplace that serves as a literal lighthouse for frozen Duluthians in February.

It is a community hub that feels authentically rugged. You’ll see people here in expensive Gore-Tex jackets sitting next to people in grease-stained work boots. It is a place where the conversation usually revolves around trail conditions, lake levels, or how many miles someone just biked on the Spirit Mountain trails.

The Sustainability Mission

Ultimately, Bent Paddle is a brewery with a conscience. Being located on the shores of such a massive natural resource makes you protective. They are obsessed with canning (rather than bottling) because cans are easier to pack into a canoe and recycle. They aren’t just making beer; they are trying to ensure that the wilderness that inspires the beer stays wild.
